Flood Mapping and NFIP Extension Included in $1.4 Trillion Spending Deal

Near the end of 2019, the President signed legislation passed by Congress approving a $1.4 trillion spending deal to fund the federal government through the end of September 2020.

The legislation addresses major policy changes sought by both parties, and includes an extension of the NFIP until September 30, 2020, and $263 million for flood mapping. 

“All in all, these bills accommodate countless member priorities on both sides of the aisle,” said Senate Appropriations Committee Chairman Richard Shelby of Alabama.

Flood mapping ranks among the most crucial topics being addressed in our country thanks to the efforts of our industry.

The Association of Floodplain Managers points out that earlier in 2019, the $263 million originally supported by the House of Representatives was challenged by the Senate which proposed cuts to $115 million.

Thanks to the input and education from the Floodplain Mapping industry, the Senate agreed to the original $263 million rather than splitting the difference in proposed funding amounts. This is highly unusual and proves the crucial need for more accurate mapping tools and technologies, and therefore better protection from flood damage in the US.
